German Shepherds and Labrador Retrievers consistently rank in the top five in the U.S. when it comes to popular dog breeds. Find out how they ranked in 2021 in Australia.

Hill’s Pet Nutrition Australia revealed the top 10 trending dog breeds for the past year after analyzing the Google searches of over 470 dog breeds to determine Australia’s most popular dog breeds.

Golden Retrievers have taken out the top spot as Australia’s number one dog breed beating out the likes of Border Collies, Pomeranians, and Bulldogs.

“Smaller dog breeds dominated 2020’s most searched for, yet it seems that interest in larger, more active dogs has surged for 2021. Perhaps indicative of current climate and a desire for a more active, outdoor furry companion,” Hills Pet Nutrition said in a statement.

According to Hills, the Golden Retriever received over 1.7 million searches in 2021, with the breed’s “sweet and social nature” proving to be a “draw for all families.”

Border Collies followed close behind in second place, with searches topping 1.5 million, making a significant jump from fourth place in 2020.

Hills also found the Australian public’s interest in bringing a four-legged friend into their home remained high “with over 29 million searches” related to “new or adopted dogs.”

The study also revealed the top trending dog names for those struggling to find the perfect name for their new pooch.

“We analyzed search volumes of 654 well-known, popular dog names as well as including terms across categories such as famous, food, and location to see what was trending throughout the year and where Australians may be taking inspiration from when naming their dogs,” a statement said.

“It’s clear that we draw inspiration from the things we love as well as what’s happening in the world around us – from celebrities to popular culture and, of course, the color of our companion’s fur!”

In a reflection of the popularity of the Marvel movies, the main villain in the Thor films, Loki, proved to be the inspiration for many pet owners when choosing a name for male dogs, while the most popular name for female dogs was Autumn.

The German Shepherd Dog made the top five list in Australia, proving their popularity reaches beyond the United States and to our friends in the land down under.
